Define a Career Beyond Your Job Title - Pathfinder Careers

Define a Career Beyond Your Job Title - Pathfinder Careers Define a Career Beyond Your Job Title Define a career beyond your job title? Yes. But let’s be honest. Really, really honest. Does your current job title REALLY reflect the work you do? If yes, then you can probably skip this post. If not, then you should realize that human resource managers have a tough time with job titles simply because they usually aren’t as hands-on in your job as you undoubtedly are. They don’t really know all the ins and outs, nor the nuances.   They simply do the very best they can to describe what it is that your position is supposed to do, and then run with it. But oftentimes, your job ends up morphing and expanding beyond the original scope, and that affects how you perceive your career. And that’s when you need to start thinking about how to define a career beyond a current job title. Otherwise, you could be limiting yourself. But remember that honesty part mentioned earlier? It’s also really important that you are really honest and not overinflate your skills or abilities in your job title. Because if you do, employers will find out. However, if you are in a current role which has a severely understated title that truly does not articulate the full scope of your work, then there is a solution to help define a career beyond your job title. It’s called the parentheses tool. As in listing your job on a résumé or LinkedIn profile the following way (using parentheses of course): Actual job title (equivalent to additional scope or level), MM/YYYY â€" MM/YYYY You ALWAYS need to state your actual job title, but to carefully convey a higher level of job responsibility and/or scope, the use of the parentheses and “equivalent to” provides a “connecting dot” between the relevant work you’ve done / accomplishments made to what a potential hiring manager is searching for in a candidate. By opening up your mind to how your transferrable skill sets can connect to other jobs, you are in a place where you can define your career beyond your job title. The most important aspect of this, however, is making sure that your résumé or LinkedIn profile can provide specific examples that back up this assertion. If you aren’t able to cite specific projects / outcomes, then anyone reading your information will just assume that you are reaching for the stars with a rudderless rocket. But if you understand how to define a career beyond your current job title, the sky is the limit.

Youre Wasting Your Time Writing Your Cover Letter If You Dont Do THIS - Work It Daily

Youre Wasting Your Time Writing Your Cover Letter If You Don’t Do THIS… - Work It Daily Do you feel like you’re wasting your time writing your cover letter? You’re probably doing it wrong. You’re not alone in your struggle, though. A while back, I had a client who was really struggling writing her cover letter for a company. No matter what she tried, she just couldn’t get something out on paper (sound familiar?). The funny thing is, both of us are writers, so you’d think it would be an easy thing to create. However, it was like pulling teeth trying to get this thing written. She was racking her brain for what to write, but she was completely uninspired. Related: Top 3 Ways To Waste Time On Your Job Search After about a half hour of back and forth, I had an idea. I think I figured out what was wrong. “Okay, let’s forget about this company for a second,” I told her. “If you could work for ANY company, whether it was hiring or not, which one would it be?” Literally three seconds later, she lit up and started raving about this one publishing company that she absolutely adored. She told me what it did, why it was a great fit for her, and why she would excel there. “You realize you just told me what your cover letter is going to say, right?” I said to her. After that, she was able to bust out a rockin’ cover letter. But the problem she had with her first cover letter was clear: she was trying to write about a company she didn’t love. If you don’t apply to companies you get excited about, you’re wasting your time on your cover letter. If you’re struggling to write a cover letter, chances are, you’re writing it for the wrong company. In order to confidently prove that you’d be a good fit for a company, you need to believe it yourself. You need to stand behind it. Companies are focusing on “fit” more than ever. They don’t just want butts in chairs, they want butts who are passionate about the company in chairs. So, if you’re not excited about the company and what it does, it will show (and it will be hard to write a great cover letter that stands out). Just because a company isn’t hiring now, doesn’t mean it won’t later. “But the company I want to work for isn’t hiring right now,” you might say. The reason my client didn’t even think to apply for a job at this company is because it wasn’t hiring at that moment. However, just because the company you want to work for isn’t hiring right now doesn’t mean there won’t be opportunities there later. If you really want to work there, you need to get your foot in the door somehow. You can use your cover letter as a conversation starter when you’re trying to network your way into a company. It’s a great way to convey your passion for the company without trying to suck up to it. Discovering what companies you get excited about can lead you to similar companies. Moreover, it’s important to understand what qualities you look for in companies so you can find similar ones that ARE hiring. This is where your Interview Bucket List comes into play. For example, if you really want to work for Google, think about all of the qualities Google has that you respect, admire, or appreciate. Why Google? Once you clearly understand why you want to work there and what the major draws are for you, you can start researching companies that share similar traits. So, if Google isn’t hiring right now, you can find a similar company that IS hiring. So, if you find yourself with writer’s block when it comes to cover letters, you might want to reconsider the company to which you’re applying. Ask yourself, “Why THIS company?” If you can’t get excited about it, it will be harder to write about it (and sell yourself in the process). This post was originally published at an earlier date. Fairygodboss of the Week Ambika Singh

Fairygodboss of the Week Ambika Singh In herbeibei unconventional career, Ambika Singh has seen startups from all sides the good, the bad and the ugly. Thats why she knew what it would take to start her own company, Armoire a clothing rental service. Singh believes all women should feel excited about what they wear, no matter who they are. Shes used this passion for equal access to fuel her fast-growing company even when the going gets tough. We spoke to Singh about her career journey and the moves she made to get to her CEO spot. Then, we talked about the practical side of starting your own company (Singh has chased mail trucks in heels, people), the most important parte of networking and, of course, Singhs shopping addictions. Hint she sees mora value in renting.Fairygodboss of the Week Ambika SinghCEO of ArmoireSeattle, WashingtonTell us a little about your career. How did you get to where you are now?Im from Seattle. I went to college in New Hampshire at Dartmouth pretty much a s far away from Seattle as you can get. I really missed Seattle, so I came back as an intern at Microsoft twice, which welches really different from what I was studying. At the time, I was a history major with a concentration in Asian studies. I wrote my thesis about micro-finance in India, so landing at Microsoft was not a straight line.My first startup experience was less than the big success it was expected to be. We had about 17 people a year in, and then the company laid off 14 of the 17, in my perception, overnight. It was really blindsiding for me. Looking back, it was professionally the most devastating thing that had happened to me up to that point. However, though the first day was bad, the second day was better, and by three weeks later, I started to pick myself up and walk away. I learned that even the worst case is okay. I realized this would not break me, and there would be another thing. I think its really important to give business and career risks the right framing. In my next startup experience, I actually ended up with Rover, where I saw the other side of startups an idea that really works. When it works, its awesome. We built a team and it took on a soul of its own very quickly. I was itchy to have more ownership over what we were doing, though, so I decided to go to business school so that I could get the skills I felt were necessary to start my own thing. What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?Im proud of Armoire. Its driven by my motivation to provide access to a dream closet to far more people than the limited number of women this luxury is currently available to. I am deeply inspired by the idea of equal access, and believe every woman should get the same skip in her step from debuting her stylish looks regardless of the physical space in her closet, the time she has to expend or her existing fashion IQ. ur mission is to provide Armoire for All.What is a challenge that youve faced and overcome?Everything is a challenge at a st artup. Really. 50% of what Im doing every day Ive never done before. Specifically, some of our biggest challenges in the earliest stages of Armoire were really logistical. My two team members and I packed all of the boxes ourselves. We lived and worked in an apartment that was disorganized and full of clothes. I cannot tell you how many mail trucks I have chased down in heels. We got to know the mailman very well. I learned very quickly that overcoming challenges comes down to peoples ingenuity and their talents. Thats why its so important to have a strong team around you.Who is YOUR Fairygodboss? and Why?Our COO, Melissa Lehman. She is the best parter I could ask for fearless, organized (I am not) and deeply passionate. What do you do when youre not working?Spend time with my people. Preferably outside. Preferably with wine.If you could have dinner with one famous person - dead or alive - who would it be?The Obamas. I know thats two people, but Im a rule breaker.Lightning Round Wha t is your karaoke song?A Whole New World (only as a duet).Lightning Round What is your favorite movie?Forrest Gump.Lightning Round What book would you bring with you on a desert island? The Lonely Planet book about the island so I could learn about the terrain, animals and any past historyLightning Round What is your shopping vice? What would you buy if you won the lottery?I dont buy a lot of stuff only things I cant rent. If I won the lottery, I would take all of my people to the most amazing sunny island somewhere. Open door policy to come and go for a month, transportation provided. After the month, Id go back to running ArmoireWhat is the 1 career tip youd like to share with other women who want to have successful careers like you?Invest deeply in the people in your life who you find interesting and inspiring. Spend your time with them, share your ideas and help them where you can. These people will become your network. Why do you love where you work? The people are the best part of Armoire. I am lucky to spend my days (and evenings) with a group of mostly boss ladies who I am constantly inspired by.
